Transcultural Communication (bachelor's programme)

In the bachelor's programme in Transcultural Communication, you will explore how languages and cultures interact with each other. You will develop analytical and communication skills that will qualify you for professions in which communication and cultural understanding are central.
What is it about?
In the bachelor's programme in Transcultural Communication, you will work with two or three languages that you already have a good command of at the start of your studies. You will develop practical skills for communication services across linguistic and cultural boundaries. You will learn to critically reflect on social processes, develop communication strategies and gain insight into the latest technological developments in the field of language and translation.

Working languages
In the bachelor's programme in Transcultural Communication, you will study with two or three working languages. One of the languages you choose must be German. When you apply, you must already decide whether you want to study with two working languages (A and Bx) in combination with extension curricula or with three working languages (A, Bx and By).
A, Bx, By and extension curricula – what does this even mean?
A-language
The A language is your first language or language of education. Therefore, you should choose the language you know best as your A language.
Bx-language
The Bx-language is your second language. If your A-language is not German, you have to choose German as Bx-language.
By-language
The By-language is your third language. There is no difference between the Bx- and By-language. Lectures and exams have to completed equally for both languages.
Extension curricula
Instead of a By-language, you can also opt for extension curricula worth 45 ECTS credits. Extension curricula cover topics from other degree programmes, allowing you to supplement your knowledge and skills in a way that fits your individual interests.

When you submit your application for admission, the first step is to select “Bachelor's programme in Transcultural Communication”. There are two options:
- Transcultural Communication with Bx-language and extension curricula
- Transcultural Communication with Bx- and By-language

Example 1: Studying with two languages and extension curricula
Your A-language is German. You want to study Italian as Bx-language and decide on studying with two languages and extension curricula.
- First, select the programme with your chosen Bx-language in the form “Transcultural Communication Bx with extension curricula”. In this example, that would be “Transcultural Communication Italian with extension curricula”.
- Next, you specify your A-language. German must be selected as either the A or Bx-language. In this example, only German is available for selection (since Italian was selected as the Bx-language in the first step).
- Check that your details are correct in the summary under the items “Selection of degree programme” and “A language” before continuing with “Pay” and submitting your application. The languages cannot be changed later (only the number of working languages).
Example 2: Studying with three working languages
Your A-language is Russian. You want to study the degree programme with three working languages and choose German and Spanish as Bx- and By-language.
- First, select the degree programme with your chosen Bx- and By-language in the form “Transcultural Communication Bx-language By-language”. In this example, that would be “Transcultural Communication German Spanish”.
- Then specify your A-language. German must be selected as either the A or Bx-language. In this example, German is not available in the selection (as it was already selected as the Bx-language in the first step).
- Check that your details are correct in the summary under the items “Selection of degree programme” and “A language” before continuing with “Pay” and submitting your application. The languages cannot be changed later (only the number of working languages).
The required entry level for German is C1, regardless of whether you choose German as your A- or Bx-language. Your proof of German language proficiency must be provided upon admission to the programme.
If your A-language is not German, you should choose a first language or language of education. Therefore, a level of at least C1 of that language is recommended in this case. However, this does not have to be proven upon admission to the programme (with the exception of German).
For all other languages, regardless of whether they are chosen as a Bx- or By-language, a level of at least B1 is recommended. You will not take any language courses during your studies. If necessary, you can improve your language skills at language course providers.
You can study the bachelor's programme in Transcultural Communication with two or three languages.
- Two working languages
When studying with two working languages, you choose one A-language and one Bx-language. You will complete 135 ECTS as part of the bachelor's programme in Transcultural Communication. To complete the programme, you must also complete extension curricula (EC) worth 45 ECTS. You can freely choose the extension curricula according to your interests. - Three working languages
When studying with three working languages, you choose one A-language, one Bx-language and one By-language. The Bx- and By-languages are equivalent. If you decide to study with three working languages, you will complete 180 ECTS in the bachelor's programme in Transcultural Communication. You do not need to complete any extension curricula.
You can switch once, either from three to two working languages or from two to three working languages.
The change is only possible during the admission period for the respective semester.
- Changing from three to two languages: Decide for yourself whether you want to continue with your Bx- or By-language. German must remain your A- or Bx-language.
- Changing from two to three languages: Add an additional language and select it from the range of By-languages.
Important info about the languages
You cannot change your languages once you have been admitted to the degree programme with that language!
You cannot switch your Bx or By-language to be your A-language.
You also cannot change your Bx and By-language (only the number of languages).
Therefore, think carefully about which languages you select as your A, Bx and, if applicable, By-language before submitting your application for admission.
