Exemptions from the entrance exam procedure
Find out everything you need to know about possible exemptions from the entrance exam and aptitude test procedure at the University of Vienna on this site.
An exemption from the entrance exam procedure means:
- You don't have to take part in the entrance exam procedure.
- You can apply every semester.
- You don't have to pay an administrative fee.

Previous degree programme at the University of Vienna
You have started and interrupted a bachelor's or diploma programme with entrance exam/aptitude test procedure at the University of Vienna? If so, you are exempt from the entrance exam procedure for the same programme. This is also the case if there was no entrance exam procedure at the time.
Follow these steps:
- Message us via the contact form within the deadline.
- Select the topic “Bachelor/diploma programmes”.
- State which programme you would like to resume.
- Attach a scan of your valid passport or personal ID card.
Attention: Bachelor's programme in Psychology
There are no exemptions from the entrance exam procedure in the bachelor's programme in Psychology. Apply for admission within the application period for degree programmes with entrance exam procedure and participate in the written test. Resuming your studies is only possible if you are successful in the entrance exam.
Changing your degree programme or studying an additional programme within certain groups
An exemption is in place for certain groups of degree programmes: If you are already admitted to a programme at the University of Vienna and want to study an additional programme of or change your programme within that group you do not have to participate in the entrance exam procedure again.
This rule only applies the the University of Vienna's programmes listed below, and not to students of other universities.

Studiengruppen
You are admitted to one of these two bachelor's programmes at the University of Vienna and want to change to the other programme or study both? Note the deadline and message us.
- Changing your degree programme: Define which programme you want to close and which you want to study in the future in the Servicedesk.
- Additional degree programme: Message us via the Servicedesk and tell us which programme you would like to study.
You are admitted to one of these two bachelor's programmes at the University of Vienna and want to change to the other programme or study both? Note the deadline and message us.
- Changing your degree programme: Define which programme you want to close and which you want to study in the future in the Servicedesk.
- Additional degree programme: Message us via the Servicedesk and tell us which programme you would like to study.
You are admitted to one of these three bachelor's programmes at the University of Vienna? You can change between these three programmes or study two or all three programmes. Note the deadline and message us.
- Changing your degree programme: Define which programme you want to close and which you want to study in the future in the Servicedesk.
- Additional degree programme: Message us via the Servicedesk and tell us which programme you would like to study.
60 ECTS exemption for the diploma programme in Law
You are exempt from the entrance exam procedure for the diploma programme in Law if you
- were admitted to a jurisprudential degree programme at a recognised educational institution and
- if you can prove having achieved at least 60 ECTS.
The 60 ECTS have to be recognisable for compulsory or elective subjects or compulsory modules of the diploma programme in Law at the University of Vienna. The StudiesServiceCenter Law has created an overview about recognitions (only available in German). Please check beforehand if your achievements can be recognised.
Follow these steps:
Step 1: Send an e-mail to the SSC Law
Send your proof of the 60 ECTS and a scan of your personal ID via e-mail to the StudiesServiceCenter Law no later than 29 January 2026. By this time you must have already completed the 60 ECTS. The StudiesServiceCenter will evaluate your documents. You will receive a confirmation via e-mail.
If less than 60 ECTS credits can be recognised, no exemption can be made. You will receive the relevant information via e-mail. In this case, you must successfully complete the entrance exam procedure for the diploma programme in Law.
Step 2: create a u:account
Create your u:account in u:space no later than the deadline. Make sure you remember the login data, because you'll also need the u:account during your studies. Log in to u:space and complete the registration.

Send the following documents via the Servicedesk no later than th deadline:
- the confirmation of the StudiesServiceCenter Law
- your secondary-school leaving certificate (all pages!)
- including a translation (for certificates that were not issued in German or English)
- including a legalisation (if required for your country)
- proof of German language proficiency at level C1
Afterwards you will receive further information via e-mail.
Exemptions for the bachelor's programme in Teacher Education
You are exempt from the aptitude test procedure if you
- have interrupted the programme in Teacher Education at the University of Vienna and want to resume your studies
- change your teaching subjects
- want to be admitted to a third teaching subject as a complimentary degree programme (only available in German)
- want to voluntarily transfer to the current curriculum or if are automatically transferred to the current curriculum (e.g. if the curriculum expires).
For resuming your studies or changing your teaching subject message us via the contact form during the application period. Send a scan of your passport or personal ID and state the teaching subjects you want to study.
Contact the StudiesServiceCenter Teacher Education if you have questions regarding the transfer to a new curriculum.
You are exempt from the aptitude test procedure for the bachelor's programme in Teacher Education at the University of Vienna if you have studied or are currently studying one of the following programmes at a university or college of teacher education in an EU/EEA country or Switzerland.
Sie sind vom Eignungsverfahren für das Bachelorstudium Lehramt an der Universität Wien ausgenommen, wenn Sie eines der folgenden Studien an einer Universität oder Pädagogischen Hochschule eines EU/EWR-Landes oder der Schweiz studieren oder abgeschlossen haben.
- Bachelor's programme in Teacher Education for secondary schools (general education)
- Programme in Business Education
- Programme in Religious Education
Follow these steps:
- Create your u:account in u:space. Make sure you remember your login data. You will need the u:account during your studies. Log into u:space and complete the registration.
- Send the following proofs via the Servicedesk
- all pages of your secondary-school leaving certificate merged into one PDF file
including translation if the document was not issued in German or English - your current confirmation of studies or your degree certificate
- all pages of your secondary-school leaving certificate merged into one PDF file
- State which subjects you want to study in your message. Note: If you want to study the teaching subject in Sports and Physical Education please also send your confirmation of studies to StudiesServiceCenter Sport Science.
You are exempt from the aptitude test procedure for the bachelor's programme in Teacher Education at the University of Vienna if you fulfil the following:
- You work as teacher at a primary or secondary school with publics rights within the EU/EEA or Switzerland.
Follow these steps:
- Create your u:account in u:space. Make sure you remember your login data. You will need the u:account during your studies. Log into u:space and complete the registration.
- Send the following proofs via the Servicedesk
- all pages of your secondary-school leaving certificate/degree certificate merged into one PDF file
including translation if the document was not issued in German or English - a confirmation about your work issued by the headmaster
- all pages of your secondary-school leaving certificate/degree certificate merged into one PDF file
- State which subjects you want to study in your message.
Once you have successfully completed the aptitude test procedure for the bachelor's programme in Teacher Education for secondary education (general education) at an Austrian university or college for teacher education you are exempt from the aptitude test procedure at the University of Vienna. It does not matter when you completed the aptitude test. The aptitude test procedure for the bachelor's programme in Teacher Education is valid indefinitely.
Follow these steps:
- Create your u:account in u:space. Make sure you remember your login data. You will need the u:account during your studies. Log into u:space and complete the registration.
- Message us via the Servicedesk and state which subjects you want to be admitted to. Send the following proofs (merged into one PDF file) attached to your message:
- scan of your valid passport or personal ID card (both pages)
- all pages of your secondary-school leaving
- confirmation of passing the aptitude test procedure at another university/college for teacher education
You are exempt from the aptitude test procedure for the bachelor's programme in Teacher Education at the University of Vienna if you study at least one teaching subject at one of the following universities of arts
- University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna (only available in German)
- Universität of Applied Arts Vienna (only available in German)
- Akademie der bildenden Künste Wien (only available in German)
You first participate in the aptitude test procedure of the university of arts. After you were successful you can be admitted to one or more teaching subjects at the University of Vienna.
If you want to study all teaching subjects at the university of arts you will attend the general educational basics at the University of Vienna as part of a co-registration.
Follow these steps:
You already have a u:account, but it expired? Reactivate your u:account via the website of the Vienna University Computer Center.
You don't have a u:account?
- Create a u:account in u:space within the admission period.
- Make sure you remember your login data. You will need the u:account during your studies.
- Log into u:space and complete the registration.
Complete the admission procedure at the university of arts. There you also indicate which subject you want to study at the University of Vienna. Pay the prescribed tuition fee/Students' Union fee at the university of arts. Then continue with step 3.
- Send a message with the subject line “Lehramt Kunstuniversität” via the Servicedesk. Send the following documents attached to your message:
- All pages of your secondary-school leaving certificate merged into one PDF file
including translation if the document was not issued in German or English - Your current student record sheet of the university of arts
- All pages of your secondary-school leaving certificate merged into one PDF file
- We will process your application and inform you via e-mail.
Wait a few days after receiving the confirmation via e-mail. Log into u:space → Financial matters → Tuition fee/Students' Union fee and check if the fee is marked as received. If yes, you can order your student ID, the u:card. You can do so in u:space → Personal matters → u:card.
You can also download your student documents (confirmation of studies and student record sheet) at u:space → Personal matters → My documents.
After the admission you can plan your semester and register for courses. You can find the registration periods in the course directory u:find and u:space.
Deadlines
You have to contact the University of Vienna within the admission period. The application period is not relevant for you.
Exemptions for exchange students
Exchange students attending the University of Vienna as part of the following mobility programmes are exempt from entrance exams/aptitude test procedure:
- Erasmus+
- Non-EU Student Exchange Programme (formerly Joint Study)
