Before the entrance exam
Your first step towards studying at the University of Vienna: Get informed!
Start your research early on to find the degree programme you want study. This is especially important for degree programmes with entrance exam or aptitude test procedure, as these are only held once per academic year. This means:
- You already apply in spring (before you finish school).
- You participate in the written test in July.
You can only start your studies of you are successful and if you meet all admission requirements.
Entrance exam procedure and aptitude test procedure – what exactly are they?
Entrance exam procedure
Only a limited number of study places is available in certain degree programmes. How many places there are depends on the degree programme. An entrance exam procedure determines who will receive a study place and may start studying.
This is how it works:
Stage 1: Online-Self-Assessment (OSA)
Don't worry. The OSA is not graded but serves as a guide for you. You will be introduced to the contents of the degree programme. There is no OSA for Psychology.Stage 2: Written test
Whether the written test takes place depends on how many people have applied. b der schriftliche Test stattfindet, hängt davon ab, wie viele Personen sich beworben haben.- Fewer applicants than places: No test required. Then all you have to do is complete the remaining steps to start your studies.
- More applicants than places: The test will take place and you'll only find out if you have a study place afterwards.
The entrance exam is valid for one year. This means you can start your studies either in the winter or in the summer semester.
Aptitude test procedure
The University of Vienna conducts an aptitude test procedure in the bachelor's programme in Teacher Education and the English bachelor's programme in Mathematical Foundations of Data Science.

The amount of study places is not limited in these two programmes. However, the written test always takes place. Here you'll have to achieve a minimum percentage of points, which you can also find in the test details.While the aptitude test for the bachelor's programme in Teacher Education is valid indefinitely, the one for the bachelor's programme in Mathematical Foundations of Data Science is valid for one year. This means you can start your studies either in the winter or in the summer semester.
